Australian Biological Resources Study
H.B.S.Womersley & co-authors
Flora of Australia Supplementary Serie, Number 5
Australian Biological Resources Study, 1996
ISBN 0 642 24849 4

This volume continues the landmark series begun in 1984, providing monographic accounts of the marine algae of southern Australian shores.
In this volume Emeritus Professor Womersley presents the second part of his treatment of the red algae, in the same format as adopted for the Seagrasses, Chlorophyta & Charophyta (1984), for the Phaeophyta & Chrysophyta (1987) and the first part of Rhodophyta (1994). Four orders, nine families, 53 genera and 122 species are described, with keys for their identification, their distribution, full Australian synonymies, typification, and references to other major literature.
The book is copiously illustrated with line drawings, halftone photomicrographs and coloured plates.
Four co-authors contributed to accounts in Corallinaceae: W.J. Woelkerling, A.S. Harvey, D.L. Penrose and W.H. Johansen. There are 16 descriptions of new species or new combinations, and many previously recognised species have been reassigned to different genera or reduced to synonymy.
This book is an essential reference work on an important group of plants. It will have relevance far beyond the shores of southern Australia.
